Honey for Tonsillectomy Pain?

Looking for Ear, Nose and Throat care tips? Our doctors and staff share the latest developments in our blog.

7-12-14 Dr Robert Prehn.cropped.jpgTonsillectomy is one of the most common surgical procedures performed in America and is an excellent treatment for selected people who suffer from airway obstruction or chronic infections. The number one issue after surgery is throat pain. While our more modern methods of tonsil removal have made the post-operative pain more tolerable compared to years past, we still need to treat our patients with various medicines to help reduce the discomfort.

The latest addition to our armamentarium? Honey. Yes, good old fashioned honey is a useful addition to help our patients manage post-op pain.

Honey has been used for centuries to treat a number of conditions. The ancient Egyptians used honey extensively for wound healing, and even the father of medicine, Hippocrates, lauded honey’s impact on helping wounds heal.

Recently, astute researchers in Great Britain compared patients who underwent tonsillectomy, with one group swallowing a teaspoon of honey twice a day with another who did not. They followed the patients through their post-operative course and found the honey group did much better in almost every parameter they measured. The honey group required fewer medications for pain control and returned to a normal diet significantly sooner than the group who did not take honey. The researchers think honey’s anti-inflammatory property, along with its ability to fight bacteria, are the reason for the improved outcomes.

So, Grandma was right: A teaspoon of honey is a good thing, especially when recovering from tonsil surgery.

At Ear, Nose and Throat Specialists of Wisconsin, we use honey, as well as numerous other methods, to help our patients recover from tonsil surgery as quickly as possible. Call 920-969-1768 if you have tonsil issues.
